According to a study published in the Journal of Periodontology, there is a significant link for periodontal disease as an increased risk factor to coronary artery disease. Periodontal disease influences the severity and occurrence of coronary artery disease and increases the risk for stroke and heart attack. Periodontal microbes can enter the bloodstream and invade blood vessel walls and cause hardening of the arteries, a condition known as Atherosclerosis. “This study supports earlier findings, and even showed a significantly higher prevalence of periodontal disease in cardiac patients. There is still much research to be done,” said Dr. Michael Rethman, president of the American Academy of Periodontology. The same bacteria found in dental plaque are also the same bacteria known to cause blood clots in arteries when found in the bloodstream. If you have been diagnosed with gingivitis or periodontal disease, be sure to empower yourself with enough information so you can seek the right treatment which best suits your needs.
